Great service from the whisper power filter

I have had my 55 gal for several years. The Whisper filters [I have two in my 55 gal] have given me excellent service. But when I started using sand. It will get down inside the filter and wear out the rubber stopper on the impeller. Then start becoming very noisy and quite working properly so maybe sand isn't the way to go.
