Seachem Flourish Excel Organic Carbon for the Planted Aquarium Promotes Ferrous State of Iron Description
Seachem Flourish Excel is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates).
- Provides aquarium plants with a source of essential carbon
- Great for use alone or in conjunction with CO2 injection
- Iron reducing properties to promote ferrous state of iron
One can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel either alone or in conjunction with CO2 injection. Flourish Excel also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3).
Seachem Flourish Excel is an integral component of Seachems plant products and is recommended for use with the entire Flourish line as well as our Flourite and Onyx Sand substrates. Contains no phosphate or nitrate.
Directions: On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 gallons). Thereafter use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 gallons) daily or every other day. Dosing may be slowly increased in high-growth aquariums. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL.

Seachem Flourish Excel Organic Carbon for the Planted Aquarium Promotes Ferrous State of Iron Customer Reviews
Plants love this stuff. Have been using it for years
Flourish Excel
I have been using this product for about 2 months and it has worked wonders on my planted discus tank. It is a medium light tank with lots of drift wood and many java ferns. Despite weekly 80 percent water changes, have always had a problem with beard algae. Always on the leaves and wood. After using this for 3 weeks the algae has all but disappeared and my plants are now thriving. What a great perk that it seems to kill the bad algae and make the plants grow. Works great with Java Ferns and helped my Anubis.
I got this Excel from Seachem (the 500ml) and could not be happier (bottle is huge!). If you dose correctly it will not hurt your fish or other living aquatic creatures. My plants look better already; this is not real CO2, but carbon. Still the plants benefit from it. I don't think my small planted tank needs injected CO2 and this product is just what my plants needed. Growing DHG just fine in the small tank! Shipping was fast and it was nicely packaged. No leaks! Thanks!
After trying many different liquid fertilizers in a small tank (5 and 20 gal), this one worked the best. It also eliminated my black algae problem.
Plants absolutely flourish with this product. No loss of fish even though I use every day more than what they provide in the instructions.
My plants were dying. I bought this as a last resort. I'm glad I did. In just a couple of weeks using it just every other day my plants are just growing better than ever. I'd tell anyone this is a must have.
I have used Excel ever since I started aquarium keeping last July or August. It has helped my plants even with inadequate lighting.
If you have Vals and Anacharis be careful using this product. It can melt these plants. Seachem recommends dosing every other day rather than daily for Anacharis. Some people have problems some don't but not wanting to take a chance I've been doing lower dosing every other day hoping to slowly build up their tolerance. Due to this I haven't seen as much change in my plants as others noted. Even though it's not equal to pressurized co2 as far an "alternative" this product actually works. I'm only giving it 4 stars since it should include a caution on the bottle about some plants sensitivity rather than just their website or word of mouth.
This is a wonderful substitute if you don't have pressurized CO2. I have tried using it in one tank and not in the other and the one I used it in showed much better growth. I will be using this until I can afford pressurized CO2.
I LOVE Flourish Excel. I think it's a must have if you have a planted aquarium with low or DIY Co2. Although it's not intended to control algae, it DOES, which is a great side benefit. My plants grow like crazy and my Ludwigia and flame moss "pearls" with my first dose (I double the first dose, it works for me, but every tank is different so I would experiment before dumping it in) Also, if you are thinking about buying this, do yourself a favor and get it here. You will NOT find it cheaper anywhere else. Trust me, I've looked, because the $$ makes it too high to use regularly. I just bought the 500ml from my LFS at almost twice the price and I could kick myself for not looking here first. I always order my lights and other higher priced aquarium items from this site because their prices CANNOT BE BEAT - but I never checked their prices on the smaller stuff like de-chlor and my Excel. If I would have shopped here, I would've saved $14 altogether AFTER factoring in shipping. I have learned my lesson, and will be ordering everything from my lights to my fish food from this site from now on... and my Excel, of course :)
At first I was skeptical of this product and doubtful it would work, but it definitely does work, and my plants are doing much better now that they receive an adequate dose of carbon. It also works well on some types of algae, though you need to be very careful and monitor your fish because too much Excel will harm/kill them. Remember to dose only at night or when the lights are off - UV breaks down the ingredients.
I use it to control BB Algae and in a weeks time a recommended dose it is gone. I have been using it for years+++
FYI - why not remove fish to another aquarium while treatment for algae is going on.... I do not have algae problems (use of bio bugs from lab) but would never sacrifice a fish or more in this manner. I use Excel to supplement DIY co2, on low light low plant 75 (while some may say no co2 for low light there is different quality and it helps with water chemistry and other factors).... with the addition of S. Excel, the moss buds greener and grows fast (several inches in a month) even in low light, plants such as Anubias do super and start sending out new leaves.... co2 alone growth slows considerably.
This is an great product for amateur aquarium plant lovers. Of course it is cannot be compared to CO2. Good price from Petmountain.
Used this product to kill algae. Had to use 3x dose but algae was gone in 3 days. Lost only 1 oto. Plants doing great now also.
I had heard all about Excel's abililty to hold down algae, and it does work very well for this (you need to dose more than is directed, and this can be hard on some of your little fish ... I lost some SAE's). Makes the plants grow well. Also be careful on getting it on your hands. Very potent. I washed my hands lightly and rubbed my eyes and they got very inflamed.
Since I tried flourish excel for the first time in my 100 % planted tank I noticed a big change within 3-4 days in the way the plants were growing and the algea was dying. I plan on using this product until seachem comes out with a better product for controlling algea without hurting my plants. Thanks SEACHEM!
Seachem Flourish works great, I highly recommend it for any planted aquarium.
Work great as alternative for pressurized CO2 and for algae problem too.
