Q: What is the difference between a rheostat and a thermostat?
A: A rheostat is basically a dimmer. It allows you to manually reduce the amount of power reaching a heater. A thermostat like the 500R senses the temperature and turns the heater on and off accordingly.
Q: Can I use the rheostat/thermostat with a ReptiSun, AvianSun, or PowerSun UV?
A: These lamps need specific line voltages; they cannot be used with dimmers/rheostats.
Q: How many heating devices can be controlled with this device?
A: You can plug up to two heating devices into this temperature controller. Make sure the maximum wattage capability is not exceeded.
Q: What is the lowest temperature the thermostat can be set for?
A: Because of the applications for which this product was designed, it can not regulate or sense temperatures below about 70 degrees.
Q: I am using a thermostat/rheostat and the temperature is not rising.
A: Thermostats and rheostats cannot increase the temperature a heat source is capable of putting out. Setting the thermostat/rheostat to the maximum temperature/level will be as hot as the heat source itself will get.
Q: Can the thermostat be used in an aquarium?
A: While the probe is water resistant, it is designed to measure the temperature of air and may not be safe or effective for use in water.

Plugged in with my ceramic heater and works great! Never gets too hot and it's worry free!
It took 13 days to get here.We will NOT order here again This thermostat has a 5 degree swing and is not that good. Way to much of a temp difference.
This thermostat is OK and works, but there a few major drawbacks. First of all, it does not tell you what the probe is reading. You are supposed to guess or have a thermometer handy. Not great. However, I stumbled on this unit by chance while shopping for garden supplies: Hydrofarm Digital Temperature Controller (google it). This appears to do exactly what the 500R does but with a digital readout for probe temperature and capacity for 1000 watts of power as opposed to 500 watts on the 500R. The price is about the same as 500R. I bought one of these things and now my 500R is for sale.
I use this to regulate the temperature in my snake's terrarium. It works well, but its overall appearance and construction feels a little cheap. Definitely gets the job done though.
If your OCD about the temperature in your snakes cage like me constantly adjusting the lamp or dimmer,if you like to run the fan or keep it cool in your room, this is the thing for you ..to set it you literally have to turn the knob a hair at a time to get it perfect but its worth it,wait about 15 min or so in between turning the knob.I'M BUYING A THIRD ONE FOR MY DUMERIL'S BOA TODAY.. CONS...MAKE IT DIGITAL PUT SOME NUMBERS ON THIS THING I FEEL LIKE I'M IN THE STONE AGE
We have 2 ReptiTemp 500Rs on ceramic heat emitters and have both been functioning perfectly for the past two years - currently buying another one. Would highly recommend.
